Alsace has always been recognised as a land of music, and today it continues to live to the rhythm of its musical groups. This cultural distinctiveness is evident both in the professional sphere of so-called ‘classical’ music and, above all, in the world of amateur music. There are countless choirs, wind bands, and specialist vocal and instrumental ensembles that enrich our region and help to keep many traditions alive.

This exhibition is both a tribute to this world of amateur music – which is sometimes disparaged – and an exploration of its origins and the aspirations of the past. Above all, however, it is an opportunity to highlight the great diversity and enduring vitality of these musical practices, which are rooted in Alsace’s history yet resolutely focused on the future.
